Lake Wylie / Clover School District YMCA

It seems so cliché but I am going to start off with this beginning comment….. When I moved to River Hills in 1973, there was truly one stop light between Five Points and Charlotte. And while we enjoyed amenities such as the marina, golf, tennis, and the life on the lake; we didn’t have a true YMCA or an actual work out facility.

Moving back from Charlotte to Lake Wylie in 2012 was a welcoming experience for me; however, I had trained with so many friends at the Dowd YMCA, I was concerned with the fact the Clover- Lake Wylie community didn’t have a premier YMCA. Fortunately, I was asked on participate in the founding community YMCA board and help facilitate the birth of a local YMCA.

There are few things that will bring a lake community together like the new Community YMCA which opened in October of 2016. Boasting of the largest water mass of the nation’s YMCAs, our local facility has an outdoor pool with eight 50 meter lanes which can be converted to 25 meter lanes. It also included an attractive water park for our families. Inside, the YMCA has two pools; a warm pool for adult programs and youth swim classes and a six lane cool pool designed for those who like to swim for endurance exercise.

While the pools may interest many, the YMCA has much more to offer our lake community. The full size basketball court has drawn tournaments as well as Saturday and weekday 5:00 AM pickup games. The weight training area is equipped with an array of first class machines and free weights while the yoga/barre room are virtually booked full on weekends…. Here is a hint, show up early. If none of these physical activities excite you, then try the spin room or perhaps sign up with one of the training instructors who are sure to keep you motivated.

See you at the Y!
